In 1976 Charlotte L. Floyd and Jim Hemphill
established Tri-Insurance Underwriters. Their initial carrier partners were
Indiana Insurance Company and Independent fire. Within four years the firm grew
to a staff of seven with $2 million in written premiums. Aetna L&C became
the lead carrier.
In 1981 Tri-Insurance Underwriters purchased
Advanced Insurance Agency and changed the name to Advanced Insurance
Underwriters (AIU). The newly formed agency never looked back.
In 1984 Mike and Harvey A. Sheldon of David Miller
Insurance came onboard with Harvey subsequently becoming a partner. From 1984
to 1994 the agency made several strategic acquisitions which included the
purchase of the Ravenswood Executive Plaza to accommodate the growing staff and
premiums in excess of $12 million.
By 1995 premiums doubled to $24 million and the
agency opened a wholesale division, which later became Advanced E&S
By now AIU established its reputation as a leader in both retail
& wholesale insurance products. Between 1996 and 2002 the agency opened
offices in Royal Palm Beach, Marco Island, Ocala, Jacksonville, Tampa, Sarasota
and Bonita Springs. At this point, the agency was writing more than $90 million
in retail premiums and more than $10 million in wholesale products.
As AIU celebrated its 25th anniversary, it earned the prestigious
IIABA Trusted choice designation and was recognized by the South Florida
Business Journal as the eighth largest insurance agency in South Florida.
In 2003 AIU continued its aggressive fast-track of
expansion and relocated to its headquarters to a new state-of-the-art,
technology rich facility in Hollywood, FL.
In 2006 the agency surpassed $200 million in
premiums. Charlotte Floyd and Harvey Sheldon initiated the first phase of their
agency perpetuation plan. Top producers were rewarded for their long-term
growth and profit and were offered a partnership opportunity. Joining Charlotte
and Harvey at this time were Charles J. Hemphill, Charles A. Maranto, Kevin J.
Rader, Jason A. Wyman and Todd Olivieri.
Today, the agency continues to experience forward momentum - its
commitment to excellence in service is stronger than ever. The agency has built
an interactive customer friendly website at www.advancedins.com. AIU has gone
the extra step to protect clients with the ability to sustain business in the
event of a regional catastrophe by investing in powerful generators capable of
keeping the lights on, the computers running, and the client's needs serviced.
